Founded when gold was discovered in the area in the late 19th century, Johannesburg quickly grew into a bustling metropolis, South Africa's largest city and the region's economic hub.
Take a break from Johannesburg with a short trip to Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria, about 46 minutes away. There's much more to do: see the interesting displays at Apartheid Museum, take an in-depth tour of Nelson Mandela Foundation, wander the streets of Maboneng Precinct, and view the masterpieces at I was shot in Joburg.
