Founded in 1535 by Spanish explorer Francisco Pizarro, Lima represents an interesting blend of modern attractions and preserved colonial architecture, much of it clustered in the World Heritage-listed city center.
Get a sense of the local culture at Huaca Pucllana and Museo Convento San Francisco y Catacumbas. Get some historical perspective at San Pedro Church (Iglesia de San Pedro) and Cathedral of Lima. Step out of Lima with an excursion to El Silencio in Punta Hermosa--about 1h 20 min away. There's lots more to do: kick back and relax at Playa Penascal, wander the streets of Miraflores, admire the landmark architecture of Archbishops Palace, and tour the pleasant surroundings at Playa Kon-Tiki.

Capital of the Inca Empire for three centuries, World Heritage-listed Cusco is now a major tourist destination, drawing nearly 2 million annual tourists with its well-preserved colonial architecture and proximity to Machu Picchu.
Your inner history buff will appreciate Sacsayhuaman and Plaza de Armas. Get some cultural insight at Qorikancha and Centro Historico De Cusco.
