The Oude Church, Amsterdam

3.0
Complete with a wooden roof and a floor made up of gravestones, The Oude Church stands as the oldest building in Amsterdam, aged over 800 years. Originally constructed in 1214, the church underwent several modifications in the following 400 years, eventually converting from a Catholic venue to Protestant one. Visit the building and explore its vaulted interior. Today the interior looks plain due to destruction during the Reformation; however, it still features several intricate stained glass windows and centuries-old organs. As you wander, examine the graves beneath your feet and you'll see the names of many prominent Amsterdam residents and statesmen, as well as the wife of the famed Dutch painter Rembrandt. Be sure to take a peek into the rooms surrounding the central hall, where you'll find displays of paintings and artifacts from the church. • Nice location. Lovely coffee and my wife and I really enjoyed the apple pie. The other cakes and pastries on sale looked very appealing too, but we couldn't resist the pie. Delicious! This is a busy place. We visited in the late afternoon and there were still queues for seating, especially in the outdoor entrance courtyard area. Well worth a visit.
  • Amazing cathedral in the center of the city with a free audio cuide to know the history. It is very cheap (12€) and you can use your student card to get a discount. The Oude Kerk caught the corner of my eye during a wander through the city. At first, I was a little taken aback by the red light windows located so close to the church.
