South Church (Zuiderkerk), Amsterdam

3.6
The first Protestant church built in Amsterdam, South Church (Zuiderkerk) played an important role in the life of Rembrandt, who lived and worked very near this location. Designed by Dutch Renaissance architect Hendrick de Keyser in 1611, the distinctive church features an eye-catching tower and lead-covered spire. Claude Monet painted the building during one of his visits to Amsterdam, focusing his composition on the soaring spire. The church held its final service in 1929, and housed the city morgue during the infamous "Hunger Winter" of 1944. Today the building remains open for private events and offers guided tours to the top of the tower. South Church (Zuiderkerk) is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our , international travel planner Edition.
