Trip Planner: Europe / The Netherlands / North Holland Province / Amsterdam / Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam
Originally founded in 1638, Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam hosts rare and exotic plants in one of the oldest facilities of its kind in the world. After falling on hard times during the latter half of the 20th century, the garden rebounded to become one of Amsterdam's most popular tourist sites. Wander the themed pathways through the collection of over 6,000 resident plants, including a large cycad collection and several specimens hundreds of years old. You'll see some of the same plants, such as coffee and palms, which helped the Dutch East India Company spur its respective industries in South America and the East Indies. Afterward stop for a bite at the terraced cafe, which offers coffee and snacks. Plan your Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam visit and explore what else you can see and do in Amsterdam using our Amsterdam trip planner.

Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam Reviews
Probably a very special place if you are a plant and vegetation freak. For me, as average Joe too much to handle and too little garden feel. more »
Very peaceful well maintained botanical garden. I am a big fan of botanical gardens, so this was easy. I have to admit that the restaurant/café is well blended with the garden. The coffee was okay. more »
Fabulous botanical gardens with so much to see & experience within their grounds. The butterfly house was utterly delightful, with butterflies flying all around you. The pond containing a lotus flower with enormous lily pads is an amazing sight to behold. The three climate greenhouse was also a sensory delight. For the perfect finish to your visit you will find a delicious cake & a coffee in their well-stocked cafe. Enjoy!
Such a beautiful garden. It has a lovely tropical greenhouse area, desert greenhouse, and a butterfly greenhouse. The whole garden is in the small side but still very much worth the visit. Also a great place to have something to drink and a bite to eat. Only reason I give 4 instead of 5 stars is the very long wait to go inside. I had the feeling tickets and entry could have been much more efficient (people who bought tickets in advance still had to wait 20 min + in line with everyone else).
