Beautiful period house. In every room samples of collections from Amsterdammers that were donated to the city. Informative audio tour. At the top floors, the building houses the biblical museum, this is a separate collection, although your ticket gives access to both museums.
Cromhout House, which also houses the Bible Museum is a huge 17th century canal house on Herengracht which was formerly the home of the ultra wealthy Cromhout family. Today, the building houses collections from prominent residents who have donated or bequeathed personal collections to the city of Amsterdam. Here you will find every kind of collectable imaginable from armoury and jewellery to ceramics and paintings. The architectural features are stunning and give an insight as to how the wealthy Dutch merchants lived. The house was commissioned in 1660 and actually consists of 4 canal houses together, designed by Dutch architect Philips Vingboons and completed two years later. One of the properties was owned by a timber trader who was reluctant to move and Cromhout was forced to buy him out for 10,000 builders, an astronomical sum of money at the time. Highlights of the house include a stunning oval staircase dating from 1717, a ceiling painting by Jacob de Wit, beautiful landscaped garden and two preserved kitchens, one of which is one of the oldest in Amsterdam. A ticket to the house includes admission to the Bible Museum on the upper floors. Price includes an audio-guided tour of all of the rooms through a portable player. It's worth coming here, just to sit in the garden alone. The museum is not as busy as others in the city and here you get the views without the queues. Besides donated collections, there is the Cromhouts' own impressive collection of dining ware, silver, glassware, furniture, paintings, portraits and numerous curiosities. The Bible Museum houses the collection of the Reverend Leendert Schouten, including the 1477 Delftse Bijbel, the oldest bible printed in the Netherlands, models of Solomon's and Herod's temples and The Tabernacle depicting the portable shrine of the Israelites following their exodus from Egypt. There are many archaeological discoveries and artefacts from ancient Egypt including some mummified bodies. Cafe Cromhout and the adjoining garden rooms are ideal surroundings to enjoy tea or coffee with pastry from renowned Lanskroon patisserie.
