Santa Maria del Pi is a 14th-century Gothic church in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. It is situated on the Plaça del Pi, in the Barri Gòtic district of the city.By using our Barcelona journey planner, you can arrange your visit to Basilica de Santa Maria del Pi and other attractions in Barcelona.
There are unsubstantiated claims that there was an early Christian church on the site in 413. However it is known that in 987 there existed a church outside the city walls and to the west of Barcelona. This was a small Romanesque church dedicated to the Blessed Lady of the Pine Tree (one of the titles of the Virgin Mary). The church was built between 1319 and 1391. The style of the church was Catalan Gothic, with a single nave almost devoid of ornamentation. However, in 1936 the church was gutted by a fire deliberately set by anarchists, who wanted to destroy the building. The church was restored following the end of the Civil War.
The front façade has a large rose window, which is a faithful 1940 reproduction of the original window, which was destroyed in the fire of 1936. Below is the Gothic arch of the main entrance.
The tympanum of the main entrance is divided by two small columns into three arched areas. In the central area is a statue of the Virgin and Child, and above this are placed the arms of the city and of the parish.
The side façade has prominent buttresses that support the weight of the arches and vault of the nave. Between each pair of buttresses is a lancet window. In the centre of this façade is the Door of Avemaria.

We did the guided tour (with Sara), and it was very interesting and instructive. You learn a lot from the history of the area, from the church itself and from Barcelona in general. 100% recommended
Localizada na Plaza Del Pi,a Basilica com o mesmo nome é bastante bonita ela é linda no exterior e localizada no sempre maravilhoso bairro. more »Located in Plaza Del Pi,the Basilica with the same name is quite beautiful it is beautiful abroad and located in the always wonderful neighborhood.
Can you feel subtle invisible energies? Go inside and be amazed by the the freedom and gratitude showering your body. This building was constructed by faith and relentless altruistic dedication. An example of positive human behavior. Add some depth to your existence and give destiny an opportunity. May the good force be with you.
I proposed to my wife in this church in 2000 after a Sunday morning mass during a trip to Spain from the US. We returned for the first time, now with our children, excited to share with them this part of our history. Sadly it's no longer a sacred building, but now just used as a way to generate tourist money. The once open place of worship now has barriers in place and a desk staffed with disingenuous rubes only there to sell overpriced tickets. Even the glorious rose window was covered.(?) The entire experience was disgusting and sad. I only hope someday it returns to its original purpose - a place to commune.
