According to local legend, Hill of Three Crosses sits on the site of a medieval chapel, although its significance today stems from its vantage point over Vilnius and its role as a symbol of hope and spirituality in Lithuania. Originally constructed in 1916 to replace previous wooden crosses, the concrete structure was destroyed by Soviet authorities in 1950. Its renewal in 1989 brought new meaning to the hill, which offers a sweeping view of the city. Climb to the top via wooden steps and pathways to the park and network of trails at the summit, where you'll grasp just how large the crosses are. In addition to the view, you'll get a chance to see a piece of the previous, destroyed crosses on display. Keep in mind that the route up the hill is quite steep, and therefore those with mobility issues should proceed with caution. Mimo iż wejście na górę od strony parku wymaga nie lada wytrzymałości, z tego co pamiętam 284 drewniane schodki :) to naprawdę warto. Piękna panorama Wilna. Roztacza się tu piękny widok na starówkę i ... more »Although the entrance to the top of the park requires no strength, from what I remember 284 wooden stairs:) It's really worth it. Beautiful panorama of Vilnius. It offers a beautiful view of the old town and not only
The hills takes its name from the three crosses on its top, making the memory - according to the legend - of the martyrdom of Franciscan friars during the middle ages. The view you can enjoy from the top is breathtaking. You can reach the top via a gently sloping street off the riverside or by climbing a steep staircase not far from the tennis club.
These Crosses offer a good view over town and are a worthwhile walk to reach. You are very near several of the sights of the Old Town here. Also interesting to see the remains of the original Crosses blown up by the Soviets in tge 1950s.
