Abbazia di San Galgano is perhaps best known for the legend of the sword in the stone, said to have been thrust into a rock near Siena by a medieval knight. The sword, of which only the hilt is visible, is preserved at a small, rounded chapel on a hill right next to this ruined Romanesque abbey. The abbey itself sits in a colorful setting of cypress trees, fields of sunflowers, and rolling green hills. Built sometime in the 13th century, the abbey is named after Galgano Guidotti, a knight who renounced his worldly life and became a hermit--after planting his sword into that legendary rock. The site includes an herbal shop and a small souvenir store. Use our Chiusdino trip itinerary planning website to arrange your visit to Abbazia di San Galgano and other attractions in Chiusdino.

L'Abbazia di San Galgano merita sicuramente una visita. We were lucky (perhaps because we went there early in the morning) because we didn't find the crowds of tourists and so turning inside this abbey in absolute silence was really interesting. I think even an evening visit with lights can be particularly exciting.
Bella location, incastonata tra le colline senesi, l'Abbazia Cistercense di San Galgano merita la visita anche con tempo instabile (priva di tetto in seguito al crollo del campanile a metà del 14° sec... more »A beautiful location, nestled in the hills of Siena, the Cistercian Abbey of San Galgano is worth a visit even with unstable weather (without a roof following the collapse of the bell tower in the mid-14th century) maintains its magnificence of Gothic construction with his high-pitched six-fold vaults chasing each other into the aisles
Highly recommended. It is an very impressiv old building. And the way the sun shines through the antique windows simply amazed me. You do have to pay 4€ to get in but it is totally fine for the things you get to see. I would definitely go there again.
I love buildings with atmosphere. As there is no roof, the play of sun and shadow under the arcs was magical. A wedding just took place there, they will have beautiful photos.
