Abbazia di San Galgano is perhaps best known for the legend of the sword in the stone, said to have been thrust into a rock near Siena by a medieval knight. The sword, of which only the hilt is visible, is preserved at a small, rounded chapel on a hill right next to this ruined Romanesque abbey. The abbey itself sits in a colorful setting of cypress trees, fields of sunflowers, and rolling green hills. Built sometime in the 13th century, the abbey is named after Galgano Guidotti, a knight who renounced his worldly life and became a hermit--after planting his sword into that legendary rock. The site includes an herbal shop and a small souvenir store. Use our Chiusdino trip itinerary planning website to arrange your visit to Abbazia di San Galgano and other attractions in Chiusdino.

Near there is a farm where you can eat and fine! To enter there is to pay a ticket and dogs are allowed, I was amazed! It deserves so much! Super photographable! I recommend it! Magic

Visiting it and knowing its history through the information received, we retrace a period of history of monasticism in Tuscany and its various events.
Well worth the visit. A few Euro for an interesting look inside the Abbey.
Not worth the trip. Poorly presented. Lots of fencing and old equipment laying about. You British and French probably have a much more impressive version of this down the street. For some reason it costs 3.50 Euros to get in. In and out in 10 minutes. A wasted trip.
