Mount Agung, Bali

#12 of 78 in Nature in Bali
Climb to the highest point in Bali at Mount Agung, an active volcano. Although it has not erupted since 1964, the volcano still belches smoke and ash occasionally from its large, deep crater. The Balinese believe the volcano to be a replica of Mount Meru, the central axis of the universe according to Hindu mythology. Climb to the lip of the crater, or continue on all the way to the summit to enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Along the way, stop at one of the largest and holiest Hindu temples in Bali, which features stepped terraces and courtyards centered around a lotus throne. Unfortunately, a local syndicate operating in and around the temple targets tourists, forcing them to pay for a guide to accompany them to see the majority of the temple. The ascent to the summit does not require special mountain climbing experience or equipment, but inexperienced trekkers should take a guide. Wear sturdy shoes, and warm, layered clothing, including waterproof attire. Note that cloud cover obscures the view from 9 a.m. onwards. • During my visit to Bali in the February 2018, I could admire the Mount Agung unfortunately only from a safe distance. Due to the outbreak shortly before there was even the 10-kilometre exclusion zone. The pictures here were taken by the Volcano Observatory. Even from a distance an impressive sight!

  • I've been there like 10 years ago, still carrying some great souvenirs, while when i was in Bali recently I could not go to Agung because of its erruption.
  • Nice drive leading up to Mount Agung. Definitely a high elevation so take your jacket because in the morning and evening it is chilly. Nice view from the parking area. Lots of vendors so be prepared to say no many, many times. It was active when we visited so that added to the excitement.
