Iceladic history comes to life at National Museum of Iceland, founded in 1863. Though its collections used to be held in various Danish institutions, the museum now houses objects returned to their country of origin in the 19th century. The permanent exhibit includes a celebrated carved door depicting a lion slaying a dragon. National Museum of Iceland Reviews
Spent a couple of hours here when we first arrived in Reykjavik. Very interesting if you're into history and vikings. A lot of very well preserved artefacts. more »

Small but Iceland is a small country. Two floors cover its history from settlement to the 20th century. There is a nice selection of artifacts with some truly beautiful samples of ecclesiastical art. Gift shop is small but has a good selection. Admission here gets you into two other museums.
The National Museum of Iceland is obviously curated and managed by brilliant people. The collection is beautiful, thorough, and laid out in a way that it keeps you interested and active the whole way through. It stops just short of the interactive hands on games and activities found in child centric museums, but it was way more interactive and engaging than it had any right to be. I am particularly interested in Norse mythology and runes and I wanted to be disappointed that the museum was way more centered on the Christian aspects of Iceland but I couldn't be because it made it very clear why it was laid out the way it was and it was clear what kinds of artifacts I would be seeing as soon as I walked in. If you like museums, history, learning, or just getting to know the culture of a place, I highly encourage a visit.
