Gunnuhver Hot Springs, Grindavik
Witness the unusual landscape of Iceland with its volcanic rock, boiling mud pools, and steam vents at Gunnuhver Hot Springs. The highly active geothermal area was named after the legend of an angry witch named Gunna, whose spirit was trapped in the hot springs by a local pastor 400 years ago. The ghost story and the strong sulfur vapor add to the eerie atmosphere of the place. See the largest mud pool in Iceland, 20 m (65 ft) in diameter, boiling vigorously along its rims. Follow the signs, and stick to the paths. Note that the smell of sulfur can be overwhelming. Amenities include a small rest area and limited toilet facilities. You are around here very quickly and there is nothing else about accommodation, but it is worth a short stop.
This place is really cool. The constant steam and scalding water are quite interesting to watch and the brightly colored rocks are really pretty. more »
If you are planning on going to the blue lagoon, take a quick stop by here as it's quite close by. A great tale about this place and a little bit extreme with huge vapours rising from deep below. Do stick to the path though, as you would not want to fall through, and down into a big boiler
Great stop. I didn’t spend a ton of time there, but the hot springs were awe-inspiring up close and in person. They were almost intimidating to be honest. The various warning signs surrounding the area in addition to the ghost story/history and just the hot springs itself really were scary but amazing. Stunning views the whole drive there (I came from KEF international airport) and got a great look at the light house.
