Housed in the painter's town of Haarlem, Frans Hals Museum represents the largest repository of the famed Dutch artist's works in the world. Spending most of his life in Holland, Hals specialized in leaving his paintings with a "rough" finish. Visit the museum and peruse its collection of more than 750 paintings and works spread out over numerous galleries and exhibitions. Inspect Hals' "loose brushwork" up-close to fully appreciate the sense of life and movement it brought to his art, perhaps his most notable trademark. You can listen to an audio tour, included in your admission, or download the museum's smartphone app for more in-depth information along the way. Don't miss seeing the facility's collection of religious artwork and Haarlem-related artifacts also on display. Are you in Haarlem, then you should actually do to this museum. On one of the two locations do you buy your card, where you then can at the other location also inside. The venues are a few hundred metres apart. Museums are decorated with care and not very large, making a visit not immediately have to take a whole day.
De tentoonstelling Frans Hals en de modernen is een goede gelegenheid om dit museum eens te bezoeken. Uiteraard zijn de schilderijen van Hals al bijzonder, de vergelijking met werk van bekende kunsten... more »The exhibition Frans Hals and the moderns is a good opportunity to visit this museum. Of course, the paintings of Neck all particular, the comparison with works by well-known artists like Manet, Courbet and Singer Sargent is extra nice. The way the works are hung, where you can compare is definitely succeeded!
The museum was the first place we visited in Haarlem. We were satisfied. They were with a small child, 1 year old, and she was delighted too. In the morning very few people and enough spacious. I recommend to start exploring the city from this museum, and you will not regret.
Excellent homely art gallery. Lots of galleries on ground floor of former men's almshouse close to city centre. Whilst Frans Hal's forms the centrepiece, the majority of art is by his Haarlem contemporaries and others who painted local scenes. Hals was merely one of the leading artists of his time, and didn't become really famous until he was discovered by the French impressionists in the 1800s who were inspired by his brushwork. Each room has a theme to aid comparison. I didn't appreciate the few bits of modern art that had been added as comparators. Some stunning floral displays in different rooms. I spent about an hour wandering round, then enjoyed twenty minutes dozing in the sunny central courtyard before a brief stop in the shop.
