#3 of 6 in Childrens Museums in Amsterdam
Karina Schaapman (1960) started building The Mouse Mansion in 2008. Some might consider it to be a dollhouse, but it was built specifically to function as the set for a children’s book series. The Mouse Mansion is three meters high and consists of more than a hundred rooms. It took Schaapman more than three years to build. It’s been on display at the public library in Amsterdam since 2011.

In 2011 the first book of the series was published by Uitgeverij Rubinstein: The Mouse Mansion – Sam & Julia (published in English by Penguin). Two more books followed: Sam & Julia in the Theatre (2012) and Sam & Julia and the Circus (2013). The fourth book is currently in the making. The series became an instant success in the Netherlands and abroad. The books received several prices (De Zilveren Penseel, Het Best Verzorgde Boek) and are now available in more than twenty countries.

The house is built out of cardboard boxes and for the interior mostly scraps have been used. The Mouse Mansion houses a factory, workshops, staircases, warehouses, shops, and so on. Karina Schaapman also invited artists to create small artifacts specifically for the Mouse Mansion. These little artworks can be found in several rooms of the house.

The Mouse Mansion is a place where many things happen. Each room has it’s own story. If you look carefully, you might be able to discover what the objects are made of. Lampshades are made of old milk-caps, enamel canisters and buckets are made of paper, small light bulbs transform into bottles and popsicle sticks make wooden floors.

Since 2015, Karina and her four children started a family business called "Studio Schaapman". They now work together in their workshop in the centre of Amsterdam. Here they create new sets, books, and a YouTube channel for children (coming soon!).

  • Very nice, this little shop with everything from the Mouse Mansion. "Shop" is actually not the good word. This is an ' experience ' You come eyes too short. There is something to see everywhere. My niece who lives in the US, I did the book a few years ago and a little mouse gift. Since then, Julia (the mouse) goes wherever you go. Now that they were visiting Amsterdam, this was a paradise for her. Fantastich How fantasy gets the space here. And beautiful How such a paradise is ' hidden ' in the streets of Amsterdam.

  • Extraordinary place that should be in all the guidebooks on spots to visit with children. Lovely miniature display and encouragement for others to do miniatures. I wish I had the time to see the original house inside the Amsterdam public library. Great to talk to the family to learn how they are all contributing to this labor of love!
  • Absolutely amazing!! Great for kids and adults alike. Mesmerising stories and visuals, including advice on how to make your own mouse mansion with cheap materials, shared with glee by the creator and her husband. We all loved it, and went to the public library to see the mouse mansion there also. We were delighted to take a little bit of the mouse experience home with us in the form of a book and a mini Sam toy. Excited for the film to come out. Definitely recommend a visit if you love anything quirky and delightful.
