  • This statue, which represents the goddess Fortuna, is located in Muntplein, in front of the Amstel Canal and the Hotel De L'Europe. The work was commissioned in 1948 to the Dutch sculptor Hildebrand Lucien Krop to place it on the wall separating the filled section of the canal Rokin which still contained water. In 1972 it was replaced by an equestrian statue of Queen Wilhelmina, moving to the location it occupies today. In 1989 it was stolen, being recovered in the shop of an antique dealer in Belgium. The goddess, symbol of both happiness and misfortune, is depicted on a sphere of granite, holding in her hands a veil moved by the wind. According to some interpretations, this image represents Amsterdam itself, as an open city, which went from being a modest fishing village to an important centre of world trade.
