South Church (Zuiderkerk), Amsterdam

3.7
The first Protestant church built in Amsterdam, South Church (Zuiderkerk) played an important role in the life of Rembrandt, who lived and worked very near this location. Designed by Dutch Renaissance architect Hendrick de Keyser in 1611, the distinctive church features an eye-catching tower and lead-covered spire. Claude Monet painted the building during one of his visits to Amsterdam, focusing his composition on the soaring spire. The church held its final service in 1929, and housed the city morgue during the infamous "Hunger Winter" of 1944. Today the building remains open for private events and offers guided tours to the top of the tower. South Church (Zuiderkerk) is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our international travel planner, Amsterdam Edition.

  • Church that was built as the first Protestant in Amsterdam and has served as a model for Protestant churches in Nordic countries, such as Denmark. Sadly, the Protestant cult is not in effect in Amsterdam, so they are not an expression of culture as such, a real shame, I could not visit inside and outside does not represent something special.

  • Munumental building. If you are on Waterlooplein or Nieuwmarkt, you have to visit this place
  • Interesting history, but not the most beautiful church in the old town.
