Singel, Amsterdam

#4 of 11 in Nature in Amsterdam
Until the Middle Ages, Singel--a picturesque canal--surrounded the Dutch capital. After the city expanded, the canal continued to act as a moat around the city center, and today it is the innermost canal of Amsterdam's ring of famous canals. Running from the IJ lake near the city's central train station to Muntplein Square, where the water joins the Amstel River, the canal cuts through the city center, passing many significant tourist attractions. You'll see part of the infamous Red Light District along its banks, as well as a house that claims to be the narrowest in the world at only 1 m (3.3 ft) wide. Amsterdam's popular flower market, Bloemenmarkt, includes market stalls aboard boats in the canal. Make your Amsterdam itinerary with Inspirock to find out what to see and where to go.

  • We enjoyed some peaceful time walking along this canal with several bridges. The canal is in the inner circle of rings that go around the Central Station and port areas. Beautifully maintained buildin...  more »
  • Of course, walking along the canals of Amsterdam you can not fail to come across the Singel, perhaps the most important among those of the so-called "circle of canals". This channel has nothing different from the others, other than being a little more navigable by breadth. Along the way, the floating flower market develops, a series of stalls completely dedicated to floristry and the sale of tulip bulbs or flowering plants.

  • Very nice things to see. Nice to walk around
  • We almost didn't eat here because we were looking for a light dinner, but the server assured us that the portions were not too big. We ordered the 3-course menu (consisting of a fish appetizer, beef entree, and ice cream, meringue and biscuit desert, but also included a small bread and pumpkin introductory course), and while it was still a little more food than we were planning to eat, I think most people would find the meal to be just the right amount of food. The service was good, the presentation was great, and the flavors were excellent. This is the best restaurant experience we've had so far on our trip.
