Nieuwmarkt, Amsterdam

3.4
Nieuwmarkt is a square in the centre of Amsterdam, Netherlands. The surrounding area is known as the Nieuwmarktbuurt . It is situated in the borough of Amsterdam-Centrum.The square is considered part of Amsterdam's Chinatown, next to the De Wallen . There are over 20 cafés and coffeeshops facing the square. There is a daily market on the square, as well as an organic food market on Saturdays and a market for antiques and books on Sundays in the summer months. The Nieuwmarkt is dominated by a building known as the Waag, originally a gate in the Medieval city walls but converted into a weighing house after the walls were demolished in the 17th century. The square was created when the canals around the Waag were filled in 1614, and was used as a marketplace . In World War II the square was used by the Nazis as a collection point for Jews who had been rounded up to be sent to the concentration camps. In the 1970s many buildings on and around the square were torn down to make way for a planned metro and highway which was to run right through the Nieuwmarkt neighbourhood. This led to heavy rioting, known as the Nieuwmarkt Riots, in 1975 and, ultimately, abandonment of the highway plans. The metro, however, was constructed, and Nieuwmarkt is now a station on the Amsterdam metro system.

  • In the square of the Nieuwmarkt, located between the streets and water pattern de geldersekade and the Kloveniersburgwal. A general goods market, called Nieuwmarkt, is held from Monday to Saturday. Certainly on Saturdays the square is quite crowded with market stalls, where you can buy flowers, bread, vegetables, cheese clothes, souvenirs, fish and other products, but you can also get something to eat, such as fries, that you can eat out of hand on one of the resting benches Etc.. The Saturday is in my opinion the most pleasant market day, the other days you will find in a ribbon some limited stalls with a.o. flowers, vegetables, souvenirs, etc. There is room to meet the square with the building ' de Waag ' and the façade lines of the Nieuwmarkt E.O. to photograph. I got from the "market" but also from the surroundings some pictures attached. The Nieuwmarkt is the focal point of the Nieuwmarkt neighbourhood is excellent to walk from city centre, but also reachable by Metro to the tram stop Nieuwmarket, Silk police station. Visiting the market and surroundings requires a maximum of 1 hour

  • a market similar to that in other cities: regional products, textiles, household items. A bit stressful when you're meshing with the crowds. Nice, but not too special.
