  • This House, located in the number 34 of the beautiful community of Begijnhof, is reputed to be the oldest in Amsterdam, estimated its construction according to some sources in 1420, being one of the only two wooden constructions that still remain standing in the city; The other is a house in Zeedijk. Since the founding of Amsterdam almost all the houses were built in wood, but due to the large number of fires that were produced, in 1521 the city council made the decision to prohibit the construction in this material, forcing from that moment to build in Brick. The front of the house shows the date of 1528, which is a surprising year, since, as has been pointed out, the prohibition on building timber houses has been in force since seven years ago. In any case, traditionally the Houten Huys has been inhabited by single women, members of the congregation of the Beguines. We will have to be conformed to see its façade, since it is private property; To do this we must access the courtyard of Begijnhof, which remains open every day from 08.00 to 17.30 hours. Access is free.
