English Reformed Church, Amsterdam

4.0
We are an international congregation of all ages and backgrounds, denominations and nationalities. Each Sunday we come as God's people to worship Him and to offer Him our gifts and service in the historic building of the ERC. Our worship is in English; our Minister is Scottish.

We are affiliated to the Church of Scotland and the Protestant Church in the Netherlands. Although we have a Reformed background, our congregation comes from many different denominations. Our purpose is to worship together and to support one another within the community of the Christian Church.

Visitors are always welcome whether you are just passing through on holiday or have moved here we hope that you will join us afterwards for coffee in the hall.

  • This church is located near the Behinhof Chapel. The plate of 1607 is stretched and old. The stained glass inside is lovely.

  • The English Reformed Church in the Beguinage was originally a Catholic chapel, for the are residing on this hofje (Catholic women who did not finish the ultimate promise as a nun). Presumably late 14th century, although the exterior has more an early 16th century character. The chapel was lifted at the end of the 16th century due to the Reformation. In the early 17th century, the church served as a prayer room for English-speaking Protestants. This function still has it, although the church nowadays mainly hosts cultural events, for concerts from the Baroque period. The acoustics are very good. The interior is voiced, two organs, a ZG choir organ and the larger main organ. The pews are ACC me from later date but beautiful, as well as the carvings on the pulpit. After exploration of the Church, you can also walk over the Begijn hofje.

  • The orgel inside has a beautiful sound. Unfortunately there are too many tourists sometimes which makes the whole peaceful experience a little less enjoyable.
  • Set in its own courtyard, it feels like some of the city of London churches (St Andrew's in the wardrobe). Peaceful.
