Citadel of Bitche, a large and elegant cathedral built in the 17th century, sits on a hilltop looking down upon the spectacular city of Bitche. The cathedral stood against repeated invasions after the fall of the French army in the war of 1870. The building's massive wall takes the shape of the hill itself. Visible from all sides, the chapel of the garrison rises 15 meters (49.2 feet) above the ramparts of the citadel. Follow the intricate underground passages, complete with kitchens, infirmaries, and dormitories. If you want to learn more about the history of the citadel structures, you can read the information on graphic panels positioned at 13 different areas or “stations” of the citadel, or listen to the audio commentary. Both are available in French and German. • Great views of Bitche from all around the citadel. Closed for winter and would benefit from information boards around the outside. Superb place for a short stroll and a picnic. Motorhome parking with all facilities is excellent although electric hook up point only at one end. 2 Euro for 10 minutes of water and 50 minutes of electricity. Very clean and quiet at night. We felt welcome and found many locals very friendly.
  • Very charming and with a very interesting story! The tour is guided by headphones, so you can walk and hear explanations about where you are. They also have bathrooms, store and Cafe. Loved the visit!
