Former Imperial Palace, Massawa

#1 of 9 in Things to do in Massawa
At Former Imperial Palace, see a once-grandiose building now in decay, destroyed in 1990 during the Ethiopian-Eritrean war. Initially built as the private residence of Werner Munzinger, a Swiss man who explored Africa, and later serving as the winter residence of Emperor Haile Selassie during the first half of the 20th century, the building has long been an important political and cultural site. Since it’s now mostly in ruins, you can see the shadow of its past glory, manifesting itself through the imposing pillars, terraces, and the combination of blue and white marble tiles. • The remains of the destructed palace tells you of its heyday before the war. Even today the palace looks to have an amazing architecture. It is unfortunate to see this site.  more »
  • The former Palace of the ruler of Abyssinia, who had, been but originally built by Munzinger Pasha a Swiss in the Egyptian service, is now in ruins. It was destroyed in the last days of the Eritrean war of independence from Soviet war ships as large parts of Massawas. He was and is probably not rebuilt, because the memories are too bad on the terrible Abyssinian and Ethiopian colonial time
