Walled City of Cartagena
Wander the historical streets of Walled City of Cartagena, an old district full of vibrant colonial architecture and heritage sites. Surrounded by 11 km (6.8 mi) of thick stone walls, the old city was founded by the Spanish in the 16th century. The vast fortifications, begun after an attack by Francis Drake, took two centuries in total to complete, as the city faced frequent damage from storms and pirate attacks. As well as the historical churches, mansions, plazas, and other buildings, the area boasts plentiful restaurants, cafes, and street vendors. Consider checking the cruise schedule before planning your visit: the old town clogs with tourists when several cruise ships unload on the same day. PutWalled City of Cartagena into our Cartagena trip planner and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

Cartagena was so beautiful and it’s fun to imagine what it was like before the cruise ships started dropping off hoards of tourists. The colonial buildings and bright colored buildings make it such a romantic city. The hustle and bustle is a touch overwhelming with being asked to buy something every few minutes. The buildings and walls are strong and built for war, adding such a prominence to the city skyline. The contrast from the old town to the new is beautiful. The hot sticky humidity is tough to handle but being on the islands adds a cool breeze that makes it manageable. Cartagena was worth it but Medellín was preferred for us!

You can’t miss this city. It is gorgeous and lovely. Filled with many locals. Breathtaking sunsets can be seen here as well. There are many coffee shops, restaurants, bars, whatever you’d like.
